I was able to get this to work with my Wemos D1 minis *after* I added a pull-down resistor (1k or 2.2k or 10k, etc) to D8 (GPIO15/SS). If you don't do this, then the D1 mini won't boot. https://wiki.wemos.cc/products:d1:d1_mini But the fix is simple -- just solder a pull-down resistor between D8 and Gnd. I've included a picture of one of the boards I modified (the soldering job is really a hack -- it was just a proof-of-concept; I'm probably going to try to use a surface mount resistor in the end).
